nicaragua

sorry i can't post as much as i want to. internet is sooo slow. i am having an amazing time! so many great experiences... yesterday david and i tried to go to a part of isla ometepe called playa santo domingo, known for it´s beautiful beaches... we took bikes (fyi- the last time i went biking was when i owned a yellow huffy with a banana-boat seat) and hitched (yes, hitched) a ride in the back of this old military truck full of sawdust, camoflauge in color and the cab had a tank like opening in it´s roof. post-sandinistas or contra? i know, hitch-hiking is not safe but this island is very rural and everyone is friendly and helpful. well on the hour ride through rough roads our truck ran out of gas and had to back up down the hill! david and i stayed the night where the truck broke down and we went to the beach. very warm water. i´m talking 80 degrees. and on both sides of the beach are the two volcanos on the island- concepcion y madera. concepcion erupted the day before i arrived on the island! (one reason i was warned durng my travels)
we also hiked through a field of banana trees to get to the most gorgeous spot called ojo de agua. it's this pool of fresh water hidden in the forest. so clear and warm and so refreshing after our bike ride and hike. it was magical. you can float on your back and look into the trees...
yesterday, i also rode a horse to this place called punta jesus maria. it's a tiny isthmus off the island. you can walk down it as it disappears into the water and you appear to be walking on water. the waves crash on both sides of you! i wish i could show you pictures to better explain.
randoms- i´ve seen vultures, large frogs, i watch fireflies put on a light show as the sun sets and night falls, i have fallen asleep on hammocks, read, eaten amazing comida- pescado, gallo pinto, ... the popular beers here are victoria and toña... isla ometepe is located in lake nicaragua. it's one of the largest lakes! it's one of the few places in the world that has fresh water sharks and the first lake with waves i've swam in.
